Fresno Bee editorial chides Republican Devin Nunes for 'reckless' statements

From the Fresno Bee:

EDITORIAL: Passion is productive, Nunes’ rhetoric is not

Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Visalia, has been a passionate advocate of conservative causes, and his votes reflect the majority of his constituents in the 21st District. But as the Democratic-controlled Congress has been successful in pushing its agenda, the rhetoric from Nunes has become increasingly more strident.

In recent days, Nunes said the passage of the health-care bill will cause the “total destruction of the country,” compared President Barack Obama with Iraq’s Saddam Hussein and Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe and defended protesters who launched epithets at Democrats who supported the reform bill.

As an elected leader, Nunes should be setting an example of how to vigorously debate an issue he doesn’t agree with. That’s how our democracy is … Read the details.

It's official: Fresno County turns blue

From the Fresno Bee, published Wednesday, March 24:

It could change any time, but right now Fresno County has more registered Democrats than Republicans.

In numbers that the Fresno County Elections Office updated Tuesday, March 23, there are 159,380 registered Democrats, and 159,263 registered Republicans.

For Fresno County Democrats, the turnaround is remarkable.

It was in October 2000 that Republicans overtook Democrats in Fresno County for the first time in memory, wiping out a Democratic registration edge that was 55,000 voters in the mid-1990s.

The Republican domination in Fresno County peaked in 2004. That year, GOP registrations were ahead of Democratic registrations by more than 23,500 voters.

“After a decade of Republican domination, and even though the lead is small, it’s quite an accomplishment to have finally taken the lead in voter registrations in Fresno County,’ said James Williams, Campaign Services Chair for the Fresno … Read the details.

Fresno County Democrats add to our numbers at Sunday's 'Peace and Justice Festival'

The Fresno County Democratic Central Committee was once again a proud sponsor of Peace Fresno’s ‘Peace and Justice Festival,’ held Sunday, March 21, at the Fresno Fairgrounds. More than a thousand people attended the Festival, and many of those attending either stopped by our FCDCC booth or met one of our members as they circulated.

A number of voters registered as Democrats during the Festival, stopping by our booth to declare their support for Democratic principals in these challenging times.

Many thanks to Karen Bernal, Jason Carns, Jay Hubbell, Chuck Krugman, Camille Russell, Steve Smith, James Williams, Robert Williams, and all of the others who helped make our day at the Peace and Justice Festival a success. Here’s how the day looked:

President Obama signs healthcare reform into law

From MSNBC.com:

President Barack Obama capped a yearlong political drama Tuesday, signing into law a landmark health care reform bill that had been seen as impossible just two months ago.

The president said the law “will set into motion what a generation of Americans have fought for.”

He said he was confident the Senate would make fixes to the legislation “swiftly.”

Obama paid tribute to what he called the “historic leadership and uncommon courage” of the members of Congress who pushed ahead with the measure amid the often heated debate. He also hailed the new law, saying it helps lift a “decades-long drag” on the economy.

CADEM: California needs a majority vote budget. Sign the petition to help get it on the November ballot

From our friends at the California Democratic Party:

Teachers, firefighters and nurses have launched a petition drive to put a majority vote budget on the ballot in November. Their measure changes the vote requirement to pass a budget from two-thirds to a simple majority and penalizes legislators for failing to do their most important job – passing a fair budget on time.

Year after year Republicans hold the budget hostage and are able to make extraneous demands that weaken our environmental protection laws and undermine worker protections, and they even managed to foist a Louisiana-style “Top-Two” primary on the voters of California – all in exchange for passing a budget which they are already required to do by law.

Getting this initiative to quality for the ballot will be an uphill climb for our partners unless our party’s grassroots activists engage, organize … Read the details.

Running for Governor: Jerry Brown makes it official

From the Brown for Governor campaign comes the following announcement:

Today, I am formally announcing my candidacy for the office of Governor of California, to deal head-on with the challenges facing this state I love. I have lived in California all my life, and I believe the obstacles in our path are substantial, but not insurmountable. If we have a Governor who will truly commit to dealing personally with the tough choices facing our state, and who will get in the trenches side by side with legislators, we can get California working again.

This campaign will not be easy. I will face an opponent with nearly unlimited personal resources to pour into television ads and attacks. I am counting on your support, and your hard work over the next nine months. I believe I have the experience, the understanding of State Government, and commitment required to move California forward. I look … Read the details.
